Министерство иностранных дел Индии подтвердило, что ВВС страны потеряли истребитель МиГ-21, сообщает The Times of India. Об этом рассказал официальный представитель индийского МИД Равиш Кумар.

Также, по словам представителя МИД, в воздушном бою был уничтожен один истребитель ВВС Пакистана. МиГ-21 — это один из старейших истребителей, который остается на вооружении различных стран мира. Истребитель выпускался с 1959 по 2017 годы.
За характерную форму крыла (дельтовидная и треугольная) советские летчики прозвали МиГ-21 «Балалайкой». Сталкивающиеся с ним в бою летчики НАТО дали более грозное прозвище — «летающий Калашников».
На момент своего появления в 60-х годах этот истребитель установил несколько скоростных рекордов. На доработанной версии истребителя под обозначением E-66 летчик-истребитель Георгий Мосолов смог установить 31 октября 1959 года абсолютный рекорд скорости на дистанции 15/25 км — 2388 км/ч. Спустя год — 16 октября 1960 года — в копилке истребителя появился еще один рекорд на дистанции 100 км — 2146 км/ч.
В Индии модернизированный истребитель получил название MiG-21UPG Bison. Эта модификация оснащается БРЛС «Копье», способной сопровождать до восьми целей и одновременно атаковать две наиболее опасные из них. В вооружение истребителя дополнительно включаются управляемые ракеты «воздух-воздух» РВВ-АЕ, Р-27Р1, Р-27Т1 и Р-73Э и корректируемые бомбы КАБ-500Кр.
Ранее сообщалось, что два самолета Военно-воздушных сил Индии были сбиты утром в среду над линией контроля между странами в воздушном пространстве Пакистана. Днем ранее ВВС Индии атаковали позиции боевиков террористической организации «Джаиш-е-Мухаммад» на территории Пакистана.
