Ученые нашли правдоподобное объяснение расположению моаи — гигантских каменных истуканов на острове Пасхи в Тихом океане. Согласно выводам новой работы, их устанавливали в местах нахождения пресной воды и других ресурсов. Статья опубликована в журнале PLOS One, передает «Индикатор».

Огромные статуи на острове Пасхи интересуют ученых с момента открытия острова несколько веков назад. Многие казавшиеся загадочными аспекты их появления, такие как способ передвижения камней, впоследствии получили объяснение. Однако до сих пор некоторые вопросы остаются без ответа. Одна из таких загадок — принцип расположения статуй.
В ходе работы ученые отмечали на карте источники пресной воды и другие важные точки, например, места для рыбалки. Исследователи также проанализировали расположение 93 аху — мегалитических каменных платформ, «постаментов» для статуй. Авторы отмечают, что расположение платформ и статуй, а также форма и размер сооружений могут указывать на обилие и качество жизненно важных ресурсов.
«Наша работа демонстрирует важный факт: места расположения статуй не являются ритуальными сами по себе, — комментирует соавтор работы Карл Липо из Бингемтонского университета (США). — Аху и моаи наделены символическим смыслом, но были интегрированы в жизнь местного сообщества».
