В залежах янтаря был найден кусок застывшей смолы, в который вместе с обитателями поверхности оказались пойманы и морские создания. Об этом сообщает «Популярная механика» со ссылкой на статью в журнале PNAS.
В окаменелом кусочке янтаря обнаружили морских существ, обитавших бок о бок с жителями поверхности. Исследователи нашли четырех морских улиток и одного юного аммонита прямиком со дна океана. Они были пойманы в липкую ловушку в зоне отлива, когда отступившая вода оставила их на обнажившемся пляже.
В результате получился пласт янтаря, в котором помимо жителей океана также застряли 22 клеща, восемь мух, два жука, оса-паразит, таракан и многоножка. И все это — в куске размером 33×29×9,5 мм.
«Встретить водные организмы в янтаре можно редко. Встретить морских обитателей в янтаре тоже можно, но куда реже. И совсем феноменальным выглядит тот факт, что морские существа окажутся смешанными с жителями поверхности и теми, кто живет в пресной воде», — отмечают авторы статьи.
Кроме того, ученые так и не смогли определить возраст находки. Датирование матрицы вулканической породы, из которой и добыли янтарь, указывает на срок в 99,8 миллиона лет. А вот слой песчаника, на котором лежал ископаемый аммонит, датирован 113 миллионами лет — разница между ними колоссальная, хоть с перспективы человека оба образования и выглядят чрезвычайно древними.
Вероятно, останки давно умерших морских существ просто вымыло на пляж приливом, после чего они и оказались в капле смолы. Это само по себе демонстрирует, что янтарный лес рос совсем рядом с океаном, что в наши дни большая редкость. В будущем ученые надеются отыскать в янтаре и другие аналогичные ископаемые.
