Вид наземных птиц кювьеров пастушок (Dryolimnas cuvieri), вымерший 136 тысяч лет назад, возродился в прежнем состоянии. Об этом сообщают «Известия» со ссылкой на статью Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Кювьеров пастушок входит в семейство белогорлых птиц, размер которых сопоставим с курицей. Как сообщают британские ученые из Портсмутского университета и Музея естественной истории, птица проживала на атолле Альдабра, входящем в состав Сейшельских островов. Когда остров ушел под воду, все представители вида погибли, поскольку не умели летать.
Приблизительно 100 тысяч лет назад уровень воды опустился, и остров снова поднялся на поверхность. И совсем недавно исследователям удалось обнаружить на нем «свежие» останки давно вымершего вида. После своего «воскрешения» кювьеров пастушок так и не вымер и существует до сих пор.
Как оказалось, всему причиной итеративная эволюция — частный случай параллельной эволюции, суть которого в том, что один и тот же вид может развиться от общего предка, но в разное время.
Отмечается, что ученые сравнили образцы костей обитающих на атолле птиц до его затопления и после, и оказалось, что кювьеров пастушок дважды прилетал на атолл и оба раза отказывался от полетов, ведь на островке не было хищников и улетать ему было не от кого. Как сообщает портал «Чердак», это первый известный случай такого рода, когда эволюция дважды разучила птицу летать.
В пользу этого предположения говорит и то, что летающие подвиды кювьерова пастушка есть и сейчас, и то, что эта птица, как пишут авторы исследования, часто предпринимает попытки колонизации соседних островов. Предыдущие примеры повторяющейся эволюции палеонтологи отмечали у аммонитов, фораминифер, дюгоней, но такой случай описывают впервые.
