Специалисты обнаружили следы ртути в отложениях возрастом около 252 млн лет. В атмосферу планеты они попали из-за сгорания запасов угля. С дождем элемент оказался в морях и океанах, а затем и в морских отложениях.
Массовое вымирание, как утверждают авторы исследований, произошло на так называемой Пермско-триасовой границе. Оно датируется периодом примерно 252 млн лет назад. Эксперты полагают, что из-за этого была уничтожена большая часть морской и земной жизни до появления динозавров.
Ранее ученые из США проанализировали цепочку событий, спровоцировавших гибель динозавров. Выяснилось, что на территории Индостана извержения вулканов начались за 400 тыс. лет до исчезновения древних ящеров. Изменения из-за данного катаклизма усугубились падением Чиксулубского метеорита, что привело к исчезновению динозавров.
