10 апреля астрофизики представили первое в истории изображение черной дыры. Над получением фотографии несколько лет работала международная группа из более 200 ученых. И одним из важнейших участников команды стала Кэти Боумен (Katie Bouman) — 29-летняя девушка, разработавшая алгоритм для визуализации данных с телескопов по всему миру, которые следили за черной дырой.
За несколько часов Боумен стала героиней пользователей соцсетей и «лицом» исторического события. А ученые признают, что без нее первое фото черной дыры могло бы и не получиться. Подробнее о ее истории рассказывает TJournal.
Проект по наблюдению за черными дырами под названием Event Horizon Telescope («Телескоп горизонта событий») запустился в 2012 году. Астрофизики хотели собрать данные о чёрной дыре в центре галактики M87 в созвездии Девы, но для этого им бы потребовался телескоп, который не может выдержать собственный вес.
Поэтому ученые использовали восемь разных телескопов на Гавайях, в США, Испании, Мексике, Чили и на Южном полюсе. Но участники проекта не знали, как синхронизировать данные и превратить их в один снимок. Тут им и помогла Боумен.
В 2016 году девушка училась в аспирантуре Массачусетского технологического института (MIT) — она изучала компьютерные науки и искусственный интеллект. В том же году Боумен разработала первую версию алгоритма, который бы превратил данные с разных телескопов в один снимок, будто бы сделанный с одного «большого» телескопа размером с Землю.
