Австралийские палеонтологи под руководством Мэттью Херн (Matthew C. Herne) из Квинслендского университета обнаружили и описали новый вид орнитопод, обитавших в начале мелового периода (около 125 миллионов лет назад) там, где сейчас находится юго-восточная Австралия. В меловом периоде на этом месте находился Австрало-Антарктический рифт, а на нем цепь активно извергающихся вулканов.
В вулканических отложениях в местечке Флэт Рокс (Flat Rocks) в разное время нашли верхние челюсти пяти особей нового рода и вида орнитопод. Так как окаменелости напомнили ученым перевернутый корпус галеона, новый таксон назвали Galleonosaurus dorisae. Как и другие ранние орнитоподы, динозавры были небольшого размера.

Ранее на юго-востоке Австралии исследователи обнаружили окаменелости еще четырех видов небольших орнитопод, которые в разное время обитали в том же районе рифтовой долины. Это были близкие родственники галлеонозавра, Diluvicursor pickeringi, окаменелости которого описали в прошлом году. Его останки нашли примерно в 200 километрах от Флат Рокс, но представители этого вида жили на 12 миллионов лет позднее галлеонозавров.
