Снимок новейшего танка Т-80БВМ с комплектом навесной динамической защиты в «мягких» контейнерах по бортам корпуса опубликовал военный блог «Центра анализа стратегий и технологий».
До последнего времени данная «мешочная» динамическая защита применялась только на модернизированных танках Т-72Б3 так называемого образца 2016 года. Помимо нее, на башне смонтированы контейнеры динамической защиты «Реликт».

Модернизация танков Т-80БВМ проводилась с учетом сирийского боевого опыта. По асфальту Т-80БВМ может разогнаться до 87 километров в час, а по грунтовке — более 40 километров в час. Этому способствует 1200-сильный двигатель. Ход танка более плавный, поворачивать легче, меньше тряски — точнее стрельба.
По сравнению с Т-72 у Т-80БВМ в два раза меньший расход топлива. Лобовая броня новинки — многослойная, комбинированная, между слоями которой содержится взрывчатка, что существенно повышает защиту танка от кумулятивных боеприпасов.
Контракт на модернизацию 62 танков Т-80Б до уровня Т-80БВМ был подписан между АО «Научно-производственная корпорация «Уралвагонзавод» и Минобороны России 24 августа 2017 года.
