Обеспокоенные родители сразу же обратились к докторам. Те диагностировали у пострадавшего столбняк — впервые за 30 лет в штате Орегон. Обычно от столбняка делают прививки, но по какой-то причине мальчик не получил ее (как и некоторые другие вакцины, рекомендованные для ребенка его возраста).
Когда ребенка доставили в больницу, мышцы его челюсти уже были в спазме. Мальчика определили в отделение интенсивной терапии, где его подключили к аппарату искусственной вентиляции легких, сделали прививку от столбняка, а также ввели лекарства с антителами для борьбы с вредоносной бактерией.
В отделении интенсивной терапии ребенок провел 47 дней, следующие несколько недель ушли на реабилитацию. Наконец, с медицинским счетом в 800 тысяч долларов мальчик смог вернуться к нормальной жизни — ему даже разрешили кататься на велосипеде.
Доктор Уильям Шаффнер (Dr. William Schaffner) из Университета Вандербильда отметил, что заражение ребенка столбняком является «трагическим событием, которое можно было легко предотвратить с помощью заранее сделанных прививок». Он также отметил, что прививание — единственный действенный на сегодня способ борьбы со столбняком.
