Гарпактириновые, или пауки-бабуины, представляют подсемейство пауков-птицеедов. Они — эндемики Африки. Бабуинами их называют за то, что последние сегменты их лапок похожи на пальцы одноименных обезьян. Они обитают в саваннах и сухих кустарниках, в земляных норках. Яд пауков-бабуинов не смертелен для человека, но укус весьма болезненный.
Один из родов гарпактириновых, Ceratogyrus, обычно называют рогатыми пауками-бабуинами. У некоторых представителей этого рода на спине есть затвердевший вырост, «рог», длина которого не превышает одного сантиметра. Его назначение неизвестно, но исследователи предполагают, что, возможно, он увеличивает поверхность, к которой крепится мышца-расширитель, способствующая быстрейшему втягиванию жидкой пищи в желудок. По другой версии, он работает так же, как верблюжий горб, помогая паукам выживать во время засухи.
В 2015—2016 годах южноафриканские биологи Джон Мидгли (John M. Midgley) из университета Родса и Ян Энгельбрехт (Ian Engelbrecht) из университета Претории проводили исследования в рамках Okavango Wilderness Project. В ходе этого проекта ученые исследуют экосистемы реки Окаванго, которая проходит по территориям Анголы, Намибии и Ботсваны.
Авторы статьи собрали на юго-востоке Анголы нескольких особей и описали новый вид рогатых пауков-бабуинов. Это были довольно большие пауки, средняя длина которых составляла 3,4 сантиметра. В отличие от других представителей рода у этих членистоногих, «рог» на спине представителей нового вида был мягкий и длинный — около двух сантиметров. Его назначение пока неизвестно. Ученые назвали новый вид Ceratogyrus attonitifer, видовое имя можно перевести, как «вызывающий удивление».
C.attonitifer обитают в лесистой местности, недалеко от водоемов. Как и другие пауки-бабуины, они живут в норках, которые роют в песчаной почве и вход выстилают паутиной. Как выяснилось, местные жители знали о существовании «несущих удивление» пауков-бабуинов. По их рассказам, пауки в основном охотятся на насекомых. Самки C. attonitiferне не роют норы сами, а расширяют чьи-то старые жилища. Их яд не смертелен для человека, но если в ранку от укуса проникнет инфекция, это может привести к летальным последствиям.
