Абидос был одним из древнейших городов Египта, он расположен в центральной части страны, в 400 километрах южнее Каира. Здесь находилась столица правителей Верхнего Египта, а после объединения страны (примерно 3,1 тысячи лет до нашей эры) в Абидосе находился некрополь фараонов Древнего царства.
Город был центром почитания бога Осириса и одним из крупнейших религиозных центров в стране. Фараоны Нового царства, Сети I (правил около 1290−1279 годов до нашей эры) и его сын Рамсес II (правил в 1279−1213 годах до нашей эры) построили в Абидосе мемориальные храмовые комплексы. Храм Рамсеса II был украшен фресками, повествующими о его достижениях. Здесь археологи нашли список с именами фараонов — предшественников Рамсеса II, начиная с I династии.

Новой находкой стал зал дворца Рамсеса II, который находился рядом с храмом. Археологи из Нью-Йоркского университета под руководством Сами Эскендера (Sameh Eskandar) обнаружили на юго-западной стороне храма каменную дорожку, которая вела в другое здание. Его стены были сложены из кирпича-сырца, пол — из известняковых плит. Ученые нашли также основание вырубленной из известняка колонны и ступени, украшенные картушами Рамсеса II.
По словам генерального секретаря Высшего совета по древностям Мустафы Вазири, дизайн дворца и холла напоминает постройки храмового комплекса фараона Сети I, который находится в 300 метрах южнее. Вазири также объяснил, что ученым придется пересматривать план храма Рамсеса II, найденного 160 лет назад.
