Во время раскопок на древнем карьере Гебель эс-Сильсила недалеко от Асуана (Египет) археологи обнаружили древнего сфинкса высотой около 3,5 метра с головой барана. Об этом сообщает Live Science.

Мария Нильссон (Maria Nilsson), археолог Лундского университета в Швеции, уточнила, что присутствие статуи в карьере «можно считать загадкой». Но скорее всего, этот сфинкс — отмененный заказ, находящийся в древней мастерской. В ней ученые также обнаружили сотни каменных фрагментов с иероглифами и различной резьбой, оставленных там около 3370 лет назад.
Специалисты предполагают, что найденный сфинкс был вырезан в конце правления фараона Аменхотепа III и заброшен из-за смерти заказавшего его правителя. Сам сфинкс представляет собой статую с головой барана, которая торчала из-под обломков. Рядом с ним специалисты выкопали сломанную резную кобру, которая является символом власти.
Кроме сфинкса, в мастерской и рядом с ней нашлись статуи зажиточных чиновников и гробница с человеческими останками.
