В провинции Неукен, что находится в аргентинской Патагонии, ученые обнаружили останки нового вида динозавров, живших 140 миллионов лет назад, сообщает phys.org. Эти травоядные рептилии, получившие название Bajadasaurus pronuspinax, отпугивали хищников длинными шипами, растущими на спине и шее.

По мнению сотрудника Национального совета по научно-техническим исследованиям Аргентины (CONICET) Пабло Галлина, длинные и невероятно острые шипы, расположенные на шее и спине Bajadasaurus pronuspinax, обернуты кератиновой оболочкой, похожей на ту, которая присутствует в рогах многих современных млекопитающих. Ведь если бы шипы покрывала только кожа или они представляли бы собой открытую костную ткань, их бы легко сломали.
Также существует мнение, что шипы могли служить индикатором половой привлекательности для самок или же поддерживали спинной нарост, который выполнял ту же функцию, что и горб у верблюдов. Еще было выдвинуто мнение, что шипы помогали динозавру регулировать температуру тела.
Ученые установили, что динозавры открытого ими вида проводили большую часть времени, питаясь растениями, расположенными низко на земле. Из-за этого, чтобы следить за происходящим вокруг, глаза Bajadasaurus pronuspinax были расположены ближе к вершине черепа.
