Ученые Геттингенского университета (Германия) окончательно решили загадку «ведьминых кругов» в пустыне Намибии и засушливых регионах Австралии. Согласно результатам научной работы, опубликованной в Journal of Arid Environment, пятна голой земли действительно образуются из-за особенностей увлажнения почвы, а не из-за деятельности термитов, как до сих пор считают ряд специалистов. Исследователи изучили несколько кругов неподалеку от города Ньюман в западной части Австралии, сделав 154 углубления на протяжении 12 километров. Оказалось, что внутри каждого круга слои глины находились на одинаковых уровнях, а следы деятельности термитов отсутствовали. Картографические данные, полученные с помощью беспилотников, показали, что явные признаки повреждения растительности насекомыми слабо коррелировали с пятнами голой земли.
Кроме того, ученые обнаружили похожие структуры, проанализировав изображения из Google Earth. Некоторые из них имели ширину более 20 метров, что превышало типичный для «ведьминых кругов» диаметр в 12 метров. Некоторые пятна голой земли имели вытянутую форму и располагались в необычных местах вроде автомобильных дорог. Однако для всех них была характерна слабая увлажненность.
Намибийские «ведьмины круги» представляют собой расположенные примерно на одинаковом расстоянии друг от друга круги голой земли в окружении трав. Они размещаются в шестиугольниках в масштабе менее 50 метров, а также равномерно распределяются в пространстве более крупных масштабов. Согласно одной из версий, они возникают в результате процесса самоорганизации, когда осадки, попадая на прогалины, текут к окружающей траве и стимулируют ее рост. Однако до последнего времени самой влиятельной гипотезой, объясняющей происхождения «ведьминых кругов», считалась термитная.
